A word about the Canons of Dort. Why are we reading this?
If you've done any research on The Canons of Dort, you've
found that they are the summation and result of The Second Synod of Dort, a Dutch church council that convened from 1618 through 1619 to address the controversy over the teaching of Jacob Arminius verses the teaching of John Calvin and other major Reformation leaders.  Arminius' followers had boiled their differences down to five major points. The controversy had grown to the point that a major church council was convened to make a determination on where the church stood.

Although it was officially an issue being addressed by
the Reformed Churches of the Netherlands, churches and denominations from around the world were invited as voting members of the council. There were representatives from
continental Europe, as well as from the British isles. Among these groups were also Anglican delegates from the Church of England and the Church of Scotland.

The Canons of Dort are a clear and accurate representation of the mainstream theology and doctrine of Protestant Church in the years immediately following the Reformation. This is important for us to know as the passage of time and the preponderance of weak doctrinal teaching has clouded many of the issues that were so clear to those who sacrificed so much to form the Protestant Church of which we are a part of.

An additional word about class
As we continue to refine and develop our capability to study and examine the Scriptures, it would be good to keep in mind the two primary goals of Apollos; To teach a way to study the Bible, in depth on your own, as a blossoming Berean. And, to get familair with WBF and it's doctrine. For many Apollos grads, this is the first step into a leadership position on the church.

The skills we develop in using our resources to examine the
Statement of Faith, our word studies and our personal passages will carry over into our personal Bible study. The SoF and word studies work to bring in the whole range of resources while our work in our personal passage gives us a close look at how to use these new skills and tools to deeply mine the truths from any passage of Scripture.
